“Sex > Love” – Blaqbonez Covers Taylorlive Magazine’s Latest Issue

Blaqbonez remained a hot topic in 2020 with the release of two viral singles, Haba and BBC, as well as his usual mix of social media antics and unorthodox promotional strategies.

Haba
Haba, his first single released in March, was propelled largely by his ubiquitous #StreamHaba campaign. The campaign – which served as Blaq’s call-to-action for listeners to stream the single – became a viral social media sensation that dominated conversations on Twitter and Instagram months after release. At its peak, it flooded timelines and received cosigns from industry mainstays like Reminisce, Don Jazzy and Joey Akan. Several reputable brands also joined in on the fun, adding the hashtag to their official communications.

Big Brother
Blaqbonez’s second release of the year – Big Brother – was released in August. Serving solely as a promotional release rather than an official single, it featured significantly more rapping than previous releases. This was a necessary move, Blaqbonez explained, to placate his core hip-hop fanbase, and tide his fans over before his official single arrived. In the interim, he also teased fans on social media with a possible Joeboy collaboration, after posting a picture of the two artists in the studio on Instagram.

BBC
Blaq’s latest release, BBC was released in October, and is currently doing the rounds on DSPs and radio in Nigeria. As part of his promo run for the single, Blaq attended his media appearances (radio, web and television) with his adopted pet chicken which he named, ‘Bisi’. Images of the chicken are plastered across Blaq’s social media pages, and have been creatively repurposed for promotional content, including the single’s cover art

Sex>Love Overview
Sex>Love (pronounced ‘sex over love’) is a concept-driven album from Blaqbonez which broaches the subject of sex from a number of unique angles. Its content is raunchy, sensual, and willfully absurd/exaggerated on occasion. Designed with the intent to seduce, awe and thoroughly entertain its listener.

On the project, Blaq leans heavily into his afrobeats and Caribbean influences, crafting mid-tempo records that are just as suited to the dancefloor, as they are to the bedroom. It also overall displays Blaq’s unshakeable versatility, and sports a number of exciting, carefully crafted features with some of the more exciting names in afrobeats, and the Nigerian alternative music scene.

It is also Blaqbonez’s sexiest project to date, a clear attempt to resonate more with female audiences than with his previous efforts. As of today, the album’s release date remains unannounced, but fans should look out for a new single from Blaqbonez pretty soon.
